Berlusconi in hospital after 'unspeakable' assault

Italian PM attacked and knocked to the ground

The Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was recovering in hospital overnight after he was hit in the face by a man in the crowd outside Milan's Duomo cathedral.

According to eye-witness reports, the 73-year-old Berlusconi was struck by a metal souvenir of the cathedral. A man was arrested at the scene. A spokesman for the San Raffaele hospital said the Italian PM, who had been addressing a rally of his People of Freedom Party, would be kept under observation for 24 hours.

Pier Luigi Bersani, the leader of the Italian opposition, described the attack as an "unspeakable gesture".
