Madagascar is one of the world’s poorest countries, with over 70 per cent of the population living below the poverty line. Even in this, the UN Year of Sanitation, in rural areas only 7% of people have access to a toilet - that’s less than one in ten. With its simple low-cost technologies, WaterAid brings drinking water and family toilets to remote communities - radically changing the lives of villagers - freeing children from illness and giving women the time to earn a living.
The past donations of New Statesman subscribers have already contributed towards practical projects which have provided over 3,000 people with access to clean water, and enabled 4,500 people to benefit from effective sanitation facilities.
You are making this difference.

"I'm so thrilled that the New Statesman readers continue to support WaterAid's vital work in Madagascar. As the New Statesman's Barbara Gunnell saw for herself last year, people's lives are completely transformed once access to fresh, clean water and safe sanitation has been introduced into communities. Your support is invaluable - a truly heart-felt thank you to you all."Barbara Frost
A gift certificate will be sent to all gift recipients (envelopes will be marked 'not to be opened before Christmas').
All gift subscriptions will start with our first issue of 2009, published on 8th January 2009
