Taken from The New Statesman5 May 1956 The Parliamentary Labour Party used to contain many more idealistic and independent characters than it does today. One of the most prominent was Sydney Silverman. Although he never held government office, he will always be remembered for his long and single-minded campaign that led to the 1965 suspension of capital punishment.
