Between two worlds: a photo essay
In a remote corner of Tibet, life goes on as it did a thousand years ago, far from the transformation boom taking place in China's sprawling cities

The photographs on these pages were taken by an anonymous photographer who has spent the past ten years living and working in a quiet and remote region of Tibet. Both the photographer and the subjects of the photographs do not wish to reveal their identity. These pictures were not taken for any commercial purpose, and no one involved ever expected them to be published. They are different from the stereotypical images of Tibet: they record a true picture and the unfamiliar beauty of a civilisation that is often brutally represented and misinterpreted. - Ai Weiwei
From the photographer:
Since 2005 I have been taking pictures of the daily lives of Tibetans. These images are from the remote area of Kham, in Garze County, Sichuan. The local groups have largely retained their nomadic tribal tradition and beliefs, and their lifestyle has remained almost untouched by outside civilisation. For thousands of years, they have been wearing the same style of clothing, going through the same daily routines, performing the same rituals and believing in the same religion. Against the backdrop of rapid urbanisation and vast transformation in China, these images offer a sharp contrast and reflect the struggles of the Tibetan people between tradition and change.

People who come from a society which they consider to be more civilised, or of higher technology, often assume that those in a lower state quite naturally want the same as they do themselves. They cannot understand that for those who live more simply, and closer to nature, often do not want the crazy lifestyles of the more (technologically) advanced. Because one lives more primitvely does not mean that one is without happiness. It is those who seem to have it all who are often the most dissatisfied and unhappy.
The photo of the woman visiting the monk who is a doctor of Tibetan medicine is especially meaningful to me. Tibetan medicine and the few masters of it have hardly survived the Chinese invasion.
You can see the doctor taking the woman's pulse, but not simply to feel for the heartbeat as Western doctors do. All ten fingers are employed, and they each feel the health of different organs and flows within the body. At its peak i would say that Tibetan medicine was far in advance of western methods.

I dare say it is often brutally represented and misinterpreted, but traditional civilisations are rarely egalitarian paradises. Given half a chance, I'd bet the girls and young women of this beautiful, superstitious civilisation would flee to the city, any city, to get away from it.
Traditional = good? I very much doubt it.
How can you assume that you know what the aspirations are of anybody a whole world and culture away?
