Sixty years ago, Albert Einstein was offered the presidency of Israel

Einstein declined, saying he lacked "the natural aptitude and the experience to deal properly with people" to do the job.

The excellent Letters of Note blog has unearthed yet another fascinating missive - the exchange of letters in which David Ben-Gurion offered Albert Einstein the presidency of Israel. Here's the letter containing Ben-Gurion's offer:

(You can read a transcript at Letters of Note)

Einstein responded, declining the office, citing his age, and saying that he felt he lacked "natural aptitude and the experience" to deal with people.

His closing remark is both extremely humble and extremely moving:

I am the more distressed over these circumstances because my relationship to the Jewish people has become my strongest human bond, ever since I became aware of our precarious situation among the nations of the world.

With conflict once again raging in the region, I can't help wondering - how would history have been different if Albert Einstein had accepted the presidency of Israel?

JJJ. There you go again rehearsing the tired old arguments to suit a zio logic which bear no relevance to the facts!!

JJJ's picture

@Caroline Crampton: I hope you pull this thread.

From a letter to the New York Times by Albert Einstein 4. December 1948:
"Before irreparable damage is done by way of financial contributions, public manifestations in Begin's behalf, and the creation in Palestine of the impression that a large segment of America supports Fascist elements in Israel, the American public must be informed as to the record and objectives of Mr. Begin and his movement. The public avowals of Begin's party are no guide whatever to its actual character. Today they speak of freedom, democracy and anti-imperialism, whereas until recently they openly preached the doctrine of the Fascist state. It is in its actions that the terrorist party betrays its real character; from its past actions we can judge what it may be expected to do in the future".
The "movement" referred to by Einstein was the Herut which later morphed into the Likud, party of the current Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, a man know to revel in the company of former terrorists of Begin's Irgun. Hard to believe that there are actually more extreme parties in his coalition and that the country that once invited a man like Einstein to be President is now led by the likes of Netanyahu and Lieberman.

if that extract is not a fraud then the pro-Netanyahu mob have some explaining to do. if it's real it does have a direct prescience to it. the options are limited, 3 in fact;
1) the article is a fake
2) Einstein was an anti-Semite
3) Einstein was spot on

so quite likely the pro-Netanyahu intelligentsia will now take this Einstein article to task, or if they are incapable of doing so change the subject immediately and start the usual avoidance tactics.

Armin ius's picture

The was addressed to the editors of the New York Times and was signed by several individuals (Hannah Arendt and Sidney Hook for example) so Albert can't take all the credit.

jankaas's picture

great, so that leaves options 2) and 3) then.

what now?

Armin ius's picture

Option 3 looks favourite to me...

Don't be such a hypocrite. If Zehava Galon was leading Israel you would still whine and moan. But that's what can be expected from someone who defended the reputation of the SS in the baltics and in posts going back at least two years uses inflammatory language to denigrate the Jews.

myouz's picture

Why does JJJ keep going on about the SS. We are talking about the here and now and what is happening in Gaza. May I remind you too that your perpetual denigration and dehumanising of Palestinians is deeply insulting!!!

Armin ius's picture

If you have nothing to say to me beside insults and defamation then poke off. Since your post is both insulting and off topic you have broken the site rules and your post will likely be deleted. This despite the moderator haven taken the time point these out to you previously or do you think these do not apply to you?
At the risk of straying off topic, I did not defend the reputation of the SS in the baltics but rather pointed out some of the flaws in the article about soldiers from Estonian and Latvia who were drafted into the Waffen-SS written by an MP with, shall we say, something of a reputation and who is currently under police investigation. Rather different from "defending the reputation of the SS in the baltics" (the Western Allies recognised the special status of these soldiers and recruited many of them into their own forces post war) so either you have rather a poor memory or this is a deliberate attempt
to smear by posting falsehoods on the site (against the rules as I am sure the moderator will confirm). However, if you retract your insults and defamation then we'll say no more about it.

Come to me, most beautifual Israeli soldier. steal my land, destroy my crops, assault my women, mame and kill my children, kill my mother, my brother, my sister, my cousin, destroy my schools, destroy my home, humuliate me at every opportunity, destroy my life, destroy the life of my people, crush at every opportunity any chance I have to lead a normal life. Make me beg for mercy and bow down to my Israeli masters. Make me apologise profusely for existing. Yes you can do all that to me, and worst of all: YOU TELL ME I AM WRONG TO FIGHT BACK

JJJ's picture

This is what a Fatah official said when the barbaric terrorist Hamas took over Gaza: Come to me Hamas terrorist and throw me off the roof. You can kill me and massacre my family but you Hamas will never win. And indeed Hamas threw people off the roof and murdered Fatah people.

Come to me Hamas and Hizbullah terrorists and let's be friends say Ahmadinejad of the Terrorist REpublic of Iran. Come and let's finish what Hitler never could do.

Come to me Hamas terrorist and hide behind me. I am a woman, I am a child. I am one of yours. But I willingly agree to act as a human shield because my death cult calls for the death of every Jew wherever you find him or her. That's why we launched the suicide bombings even as Arafat signed the Oslo agreement with Israel.

on topic;
there is sufficient documented evidence that shows Einstein had some reservations about the whole "Chosen People" schtick, which added to his reluctance to get personally involved. he also didn't feel any religious affiliation as he did not believe in the Abrahamic God. he was without a doubt though Jewish, in the cultural sense, something he had a right to be immensely proud of.

on the secondary topic of moderation/censorship;
thanks for proving my point Ms Crampton, and without a hint of irony to boot. you will go far!

Auld Albert was apparently none too happy with the activities of Menachim Begin's Irgun terrorists and perhaps his decision to reject Ben-Gurion's offer was in part prompted by a fear that such extremists would achieve political power. This is indeed what came to pass but even Begin could not have imagined the government that Israel has today, perhaps the most extreme in Israel's sort history.

He had better things to do as Marilyn Monroe was a close friend, oh and of course he liked to pick his nose.

@Caroline Crampton: Perhaps you could come on here and explain what the moderation policy is. On the George Eaton thread in which 11 posts were left and the thread appears disjointed.

However, I would like to express my gratitude that 'Armini us' 's posts have been deleted from that thread. He has nothing to add beyond abuse, antisemitism and inciteful language. It is a disgrace that his posts are up on this thread too.

myouz's picture

JJJ, I have advised you repeatedly to refrain from using the term Moslem, even though you know it to be offensive to Muslims. Why is it that you insist on using this perjorative, out dated, colonialist description of MUSLIMS> Why????

JJJ's picture

And how dare you assume that I'm supposed to know that Muslim is supposed to be offensive to some Moslems???? Prove that you had an exchange with me about this.

More likely you are trying to stir up trouble to get me banned on spurious grounds.

JJJ's picture

How dare you lecture me about what is offensive or not. MOSLEM is one way of spelling MUSLIM.

I will not take lessons from you. You care about a trivial thing lik this? What about the antisemitism of Arabs who use Nazi language to describe the Jews in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Syria etc. What about the declarations to set forth and kill the Jews you find in your Koran???????

And you make an issue of two letters???????????

myouz's picture

JJJ: Did you ever stop to ponder for one second before you write such hateful comments. You know it now, as if you did not know it before, that use of the term Moslem is perjorative. You frequently complain about anti semitism and racism towards the Jewish people and yet think nothing of hurling racist abuse yourself. Your comments here and elsewhere make a you a cheerleader for Israel Bully for you. Just because you have a slavish passion for Israel, does not mean you can foist your opinions on NS readers. You have tried repeatedly to hijack debate on the Palestine question here and on other threads. You cannot and never will succeed in silencing those who refuse to be blinded by zio propaganda.

myouz's picture

JJJ< are you seriously suggesting that the vile, inflamatory and racist comments made by frederick should remain.

jankaas's picture

for what it's worth i believe that Frederick's odious posts should remain for all to read. the proportion of people who could stomach and agree with that level and type of hatred are very few. doesn't mean they aren't around, but they are very few in number.

Caroline Crampton's picture

Hi JJJ,

You can find the NS's moderation policy here: http://www.newstatesman.com/2011/02/comments-moderation-moderated.

Comments which are judged to breach one or some of the conditions listed there are removed, and if commentors break those conditions persistently, a whole thread could be shut down.

I hope that's helpful.

JJJ's picture

Caroline, thank you for responding.

Armin ius's picture

Ho hum. Your hypocracy has tired legs.

jankaas's picture

rather than waste yet more time humiliating the usual suspects, only to see their obscene posts close down the thread, here's my pre-emptive strike;

New tactic is to cry to the moderator about how upset you are when your insulting posts are repaid in kind.
If you cannot win the argument (and Zionists and others with an ideology to follow seldom can), stifle debate, disrupt, manipulate and suppress. This has been the Zionist tactic in what they see is the propaganda war in support of Israel since to propaganda disaster that was the 2006 Lebanon War.

I suspect that there are many facets to the story of modern Israel that have never been- perhaps never will be told, but I do believe firmly in that old platitude, 'two wrongs don't make a right'. That Jewry in Europe suffered beyond what is bearable between the early thirties and 1945 is indisputable, but the foundation of a modern state of Israel out of land gained by violence in the Palestinian Mandate has been a festering wound ever since.

Israel has wealthy backers and it seems that they are all happy to play the Holocaust card whenever they are criticised for their abominable treatment of the Palestianians they have made homeless and stateless. With memories of the Nazis' treatment of Jews in Poland and elsewhere, the walls and checkpoints that separate ordinary people in Gaza from the usual commerce of civilised existence, are all the more a scar on the face of Israel- indeed on mankind. 'Never again' may be understandable as a rationale, but one fears that this phrase is losing its moral currency.

As for Einstein, I tend to suspect he was very wise to turn down the offer. We all know that when we have to turn down roles we see as possibly onerous, it is wise to do so in terms that don't denigrate the role. I do wonder what Einstein really thought.

steven m's picture

Didn’t Einstein have Communist sympathies?

kevin morris's picture

Although we must beware of sweeping generalisations, many of the original zionists and the kibbutznik settlers were idealistic left wingers who believed in creating a better world. Nor do I, a supporter of the Palestinian cause ignore the fact that support for Nazism was strong amongst Palestinians.

myouz's picture

I wonder why the NS is closing down debate on this issue generally. Why for example is the Jonathn Sacks thread closed.

Is it any wonder that we the general public feel disinclined to voice opinions.

How is it all the recent contributors to the Palestine and Iran lack edge and originality.

jankaas's picture

really? all contributors? go on then, try me, and i'll try to be original. well, at least not run of the mill.

myouz's picture

History would be no different. It has always been recognised and actively pursued that the indigneuous Palestinian population should be spirited away by what ever means. That is precisely what has gone on since 1948.

What Israel failed to factor into their equation is that some sixty years on the Palestinian resistance has strengthened and deepened. Today there are some 11 million Palestinians and they are not going away. they want and need their rights.

No amount of military might and loyal friends in high places around the world will make the Palestinians give up their dream for statehood.

By the way check out the ativist Harry Fear. What an inspiring chap

myouz's picture

Whoever became President of Israel cannot take away from this central fact: Israel was forced upon and founded on the backs of a third world defenceless population. Some 800,000 Palestinians were forced to flee their homeland. Which ever way ou dress it up, until Israel and its supporters must acknowledge this basic fact.

JJJ's picture

Another attempt to whitewash history: There always was a Jewish presence in Eretz Yisrael, known as Palestine, the name that the Romans gave to that land. Eretz Yisrael is and will always be the Jews' ancestral home. The Jewish presence in Palestine survived the Moslem conquest of Palestine.

On 29 November 1947, the Arabs rejected the UN partition plan which would have given the Palestinians Arabs their State. The Arab states called on the Palestinians to leave their homes in order to make way for the 'victorious' Arab armies that would invade and slaughter the Jews.

The Jews accepted the UN partition plan. The Arabs commited atrocities against the Jews inc. the attack on the convoy of doctors and nurses in Hadassah in Mt Scopus Jerusalem when 79 Jewish doctors and nurses and one British soldier were murdered by the Arab gangs. The Arabs aso blew up the Palestine Post in West Jerusalem There were many others. The Jews had committed the massacre at Deir Yassin.

The Jews were forced to fight their war of independence in which they lost 1% of their population. 6,000 out of a population of 600,000.

There was awar going on, so when you bring up the Naqba, the tragedy of the Palestinians you should be honest to admit that both sides are to blame for the mess. And Britain didn't cover itself in glory either.

myouz's picture

As usual JJJ you are spouting complete and utter falsehoods. Fact One, there is an uninterrupted presence going back thousands of the indigenous Palestinian people. Whereas the Israelis have got away with in the past driving out 800,000 Palestinians in 1948 the Eretz Israel for which you dream is NEVER going to happen. Israel can bomb, humiliate, murder, poison, rubbish, deny, subdue, ridicule in short do engage in every kind of act in order to dehumanise the Palestinians. However, what has changed is that the Palestinians are not running away to Jordan, Iraq Syria, and Saudi Arabia etc. They are staying put. The only way to get the Palestinians out is to Nuke them God bless the Palestinians, for their fortitude, courage, dignity, and humanity for daring to fight back in the face of the most barbaric assault from Israel.

The notion that both sides are to blame for the mess beggars belief. Israel stole Palestine and currently occupies clost to 90% of the land of Mandate Palestine. That you and your merry men of zio cohorts cling to the Eretz Israel notion is precisely why there has been no peace in the area.
