20 under 40: Rushanara Ali

Age: 36
Labour, Bethnal Green and Bow

Rushanara Ali ruined George Galloway's party's night when she turned a Respect majority of 823 in Bethnal Green and Bow into a Labour majority of 11,574 in 2010.

In doing so, she became Britain's first Bangladeshi MP and one of three Muslim women to enter the Commons. Her CV includes spells at the Home Office, the Foreign Office and IPPR. She still serves as a director of the Young Foundation and is now a shadow international development minister.

But with the coalition committed to higher spending on aid, does she have enough of a chance to shine?
