20 under 40: Rehman Chishti

Age: 32
Conservative, Gillingham and Rainham

Muzaffarabad-born Chishti was called to the Bar in 2001 and spent seven years as a lawyer in London. He ran unsuccessfully against Francis Maude as a Labour candidate in 2005 while working as an adviser to Benazir Bhutto, then leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party, a role he played from 1999 - aged just 21 - until Bhutto's assassination. He defected to the Conservatives in 2006 and became an aide to Maude as Tory chairman, winning his seat in 2010. Chishti campaigned for John McCain in the 2008 US presidential election, and has defended the tough sentences imposed this year on rioters in English cities.
