Assange blames "Jewish" journalists for negative coverage

The WikiLeaks founder also hits out at the Guardian in a phone conversation with the editor of Priva

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange claimed that he was a victim of a conspiracy at the hands of "Jewish" journalists, according to an article in this week's Private Eye.

Assange was said to have phoned the magazine's editor Ian Hislop to contest a report published in the magazine on 16 February saying that a Wikileaks associate in Russia had a history of anti-Semitism.

In an article entitled "A Curious Conversation with Mr. Assange", Private Eye reports that Assange claimed the magazine was involved in a conspiracy with a group of Guardian journalists, all of whom "were Jewish".

Hislop challenged him on this claim, pointing out that Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger was not Jewish, to which Assange allegedly replied that Rusbridger was "sort of Jewish."

According to the article, Assange also suggested that the Guardian reporter David Leigh and the journalist John Kampfner were often seen together outside of work, and that Kampfner had an agenda against him because Assange had turned down his application to ghost-write a forthcoming book on him.

The WikiLeaks head added that the Guardian turned against him because he had stopped them "ripping him off" for millions of dollars. The former hacker also expressed his anger that Nick Davies had reported leaked police material from his Swedish rape and sexual assault case.

Assange reportedly told Hislop that the Guardian had "failed my masculinity test" and "behaved like gossiping schoolgirls".

The increasingly tempestuous relationship between Assange and the Guardian has since been highlighted when the official Wikileaks twitter account tweeted: "Guardian shunned at UK press awards: back-stabbing doesn't pay."

Assange released a statement denying the allegations last night. He said: "Hislop has distorted, invented or misremembered almost every significant claim and phrase. In particular, 'Jewish conspiracy' is false, in spirit and in word. It is serious and upsetting. Rather than correct a smear, Mr. Hislop has tried to justify one smear with another. That he has a reputation for this, and is famed to have received more libel suits in the UK than any other journalist as a result, does not mean that it is right. WikiLeaks promotes the ideal of "scientific journalism" - where the underlaying evidence of all articles is available to the reader precisely inorder to avoid these type of distortions. We treasure our strong Jewish support and staff, just as we treasure the support from pan-Arab democracy activists and others who share our hope for a just world."

The attention focused on the "man" and not the message tells that the message is very very important.

In the article at the private eye there is no mention of Mr Assange actually stating "Jewish Conspiracy". That connect is inferred by the author even though Mr Assange tells him to forget that association. Another in the long list of negative personal attacks. The accusation that Mr Assange is anti-Semitic is baseless.

Perhaps Assange should keep his mouth shut for awhile. It looks like he put his foot in it once, and then opened it again not to take the one foot out but to put the other one in.

As to whether he is anti-Semitic? Or rather that he has more of the disease than the average? I don't know. I know that there are people out there who are out to get him and would say or do anything to destroy him and Wikkileaks not out of outraged ethics but because they have skeletons in their closets they are afraid Wikkileaks might let out. I am sure that there are more Jews who support what he is doing for ethical reasons than are opposed to it for unethical ones, but this is simply a subjective feeling I have.

So the moral of the story is let us all think before we talk.

Janet - spot on - though with caveats about WL. Some of us have been saying this about Assange all along...

No, but Hislop does. And he is right, because Assange says that a bunch of people, who are all Jews - or, in the case of one of them, shall we say 'Jew-ish' - and are together carrying out pernicious activity. Sort of like a conspiracy. Stop playing silly desperate word games! Bear in mind the first thing Assange thought to mention was that they were Jews. Who does this?

@Christopher Hobe Morrison

I think you're right to describe this as a disease - it literally infects so much thinking.

What people have to remember about this is *Assange called Hislop* - he clearly had this 'Jewish conspiracy' in mind when he did so.

Sinister.

" Ian Hislop, editor of the weekly satirical current affairs magazine Private Eye, recently wrote an article "as much as he could remember", about an off the record conversation with Julian Assange who complained that a previous article, appearing in Private Eye, was based on falsehoods spread by opponents and calculated to undermine WikiLeaks strong Jewish support."

As you see, St. Julian does not hate the Jews. So there is no need to slander him, fellow posters.

Don't know about the first sentence, David, but you're spot on with your last comment.

So if Assange is OK, then why associate with a well known Far rightist like Israel Shamir?

What's all this hype about Jewishness? Josephus was Jewish. Groucho Marx was of the same persuasion yet the FBI had him under observation most of his adult life. Chaplin, Artie Shaw, John Garfield, Betty Bacall, Zero Mostell, Dalton Trumbo and many, many others in high-profile show-biz were not disliked because they were Jewish. Or loved and admired for the same reason. Jews, like everybody else. are left, right and centre in every field of human endeavour.
Let the USA elect a person of the Jewish persuasion for President. One of President Obama's former lieutenants, now Mayor of My Kind of Town -Chicago- is the obvious candidate.

The man is a self centered fool. Getting drunk with the star status. BUT, the message is very, very important.

If ANY person is put under the microscope of the world media for 'politically unpopular behavior', they will soon be a pariah. BUT, I repeat, the message is very, very important.

hear the man for yourself. Whether you believe what he is doing, and who he is, is dangerous or not, he stands behind a larger question - why does there need to be any secrets and agendas? what are we fighting each other for?
