Per-capita income was estimated at $12,000 in 2008. However, the country struggles with significant inequality: as of 2008, 45.5 per cent of the population could not buy new clothes and 88.8 per cent could not afford a one-week holiday away from home.

Furthermore, in 2008 the top 20 per cent of income earners made 46.7 per cent of all the income in Turkey, while the bottom 20 per cent got 5.8 per cent.
