Bill Gates may have had to concede the title of richest man in the world to the Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim this year, but the Microsoft billions continue to fuel the ever-expanding development work of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

He has also persuaded 40 of the world's wealthiest people, including Michael Bloom­berg and Warren Buffett (see 19), to sign their "giving pledge".
