No hats . . .

The 81-year-old was enjoying an afternoon pint when he was told that his flat cap could obscure his face in the event of a crime.

Harvey, who has mobility problems and was dressed in a suit, had popped in to Yates's, in Newcastle-under-Lyme, for a drink on his way home from the shops.

Bar staff enforced their uniform policy after a young drinker went in wearing a baseball cap.

A Yates's spokesman said the pub had been following Staffordshire Police advice.

But Inspector Steve Thirsk said: "It is not Staffordshire Police's licensing policy that people must take their hats off when they go into premises."

No backflips

Peter Moore, 82, has now been told to stop performing backflips and twists at the baths.

He drives from his home in Capel St Mary to Colchester, and is disappointed at the ruling, even though he uses a pool reserved for diving. "It's not as if I would sue them if I had an accident," he said.
