Classic view

Basildon has been placed on the heritage trail in a National Lottery-funded scheme to promote it as a tourist destination. More than £100,000 has been spent on signposts, maps and information panels to help visitors navigate their way through the beauty spots of the Sixties-built Essex town. Vin Harrop, a retired theatre director leading the project, defended the trail. He said: "If you stand with your back to Toys R Us and look along the line of shops, that is the classic view of Basildon. It's magnificent."

Kids' stuff

Binmen have been banned from putting teddies in their dustcart windows over fears that they may lure children into the road. Refuse workers face disciplinary action unless they remove the toys on health and safety grounds.

A memo sent to staff at Haringey Enterprise in north London says: "Quite why adults would wish to decorate vehicles this way is beyond me."
