Don't carp

British carp angler Mark McKenna likes to formulate carp bait that will provide the fish with its full nutritional requirements. He thinks a carp will come to recognise a balanced meal when it sees it in future. (Carp are often thrown back after being caught.) He has a word for naysayers who doubt the fish can tell what is good food: "I don't like to compare us to carp," he wrote in Carpworld, but our ancestors depended on nourishing food to survive, and "there would be parallels to carp".

A good tip

Eighty-five days can seem like a lifetime when your property is on the market. As a result, vendors in London are having to be much sharper if they want to sell their properties. Over-powerful room candles, red wine stains on the carpet and grotty grouting are all big off-putters, says Simon Buhl Davis of Savills. For Sale boards will also help, says Merton Croisdale-Appleby of John D Wood.
