No bongos at Soas party

A Soas student and rugby captain, Tim McLellan, faced allegations of racism after advertising an event that promised “no bongos, shisha pipes or Arabic music”. He has since emailed 3,000 students to apologise, claiming that his actions were “naive and ill-conceived”.

Peter Baran of the Soas students’ union said the party went ahead and was “a success as a recruitment event for the rugby team”.

Victim of a car crush

Asha Jihu had gone away to China to nurse her father, who was suffering from cancer. She hired a garage from the council for £6.93 a week to store her £20,000 BMW coupé, but on her return discovered the car had been taken away and crushed due to an outstanding bill of £120. Ms Jihu had not realised that her direct debit payments had not covered a small increase in her bill, which was raised during her absence and without her knowledge.

She said: “They have offered no proof of what happened to my car.”
