This England

Published 07 May 2007

Who let the kids out?

I do not have a dog as I feel it kinder for them to be in the country. But the English love their dogs and any government would fall instantly if good folk were banned from keeping dogs in our cities, though I do wish owners, in country and city alike, were more carefully vetted for the sake of dogs, parks and society as a whole.

The real problems in Waterlow Park are amplified music and loudspeakers on occasions, but more regularly, some pretty ghastly children who yell and shriek continually, such that it pains the human ear. What must it do for the wildlife (and dogs), whose hearing is more acute?

Letter in the Ham and High (Sigrid Rabiger)

Gentleman of the road

In mitigation, Stephen Banks said his client could be described as "a gentleman of the road".

"He is not a burglar, does not steal things and does not act in a violent way. He simply enters restaurants and has a very nice meal knowing he can't pay for it."

Craven Herald and Pioneer (John Buckman)
