Security risks

The prisoner Aaron Williams, 21, was dragged from a security van at the courthouse gates screaming: "Don't let them take me!"

As the driver buzzed security staff to let his unmarked Mercedes van through the gates, he was punched in the face and bundled to the ground. Williams was hauled out of the vehicle and forced into a stolen Vauxhall Zafira, which was found abandoned less than a mile away. Both front side windows were smashed and a tyre slashed.

Last night a police hunt was launched for Williams.

Detective Inspector Danny Woodward, heading the inquiry, admitted: "Kidnapping is at the forefront of my mind."

Compensation order

An inmate at a youth offenders' institution who tried to commit suicide has won £575,000 in public money as compensation - after warders saved his life.

The Liberal Democrat MP Phil Willis said the payout could either be down to gross negligence or "political correctness".
