Taking His name in vain

I noticed a cheque drawn on my Bradford & Bingley account last August carried a customer reference: FOX CHRIST.

I told the bank that I strongly objected to this on religious grounds, but its answer was that references are based on surnames and a shortened first name but that its technical staff would look into it. Recently, exactly the same thing happened again, so this time I closed my account.

I received a patronising letter to say that any account in my name would have the same reference, so now I am also going to close my ISA and the accounts of my three grandchildren.

Low-profile PR

The Serious Organised Crime Agency has poached the DTI's chief press officer, Lucy Lancaster, to oversee its media function.

A Soca spokesman confirmed Lancaster's hire, but declined to comment further, saying: "We are trying to draw as little attention [to ourselves] as possible."
