Playing rough
Last month Maurice Ward, director of the Maltings Theatre in the north of England, announced he had asked the Scottish Borders local authority for a £50,000 contribution because of the large number of Scots in the audiences.
Dismissed as "absurd" by the SBC, the request was refused, so Mr Ward said he had no alternative but to consider charging Scots more for their tickets. "It is not equitable that Berwick taxpayers should provide such a large subsidy for users outside the borough."
When the local MSP threatened legal action after the CRE claimed the policy could be in breach of the Race Relations Act, the theatre said it was scrapping the plans.

Shome mishtake?
Motorists whose parked cars were vandalised by two drunks have been told the culprits will not be prosecuted. A policeman wrote to explain: "Due to their both being unemployed foreign nationals with no income it was not in the public interest . . . due to the expenses incurred in having a trial."
