Saudi Arabia: unemployment



This graph shows unemployment as a percentage of total labour force in Saudi Arabia, which the International Labour Organisation placed at 5.4 per cent in 2009. It also shows the youth unemployment rate for 2008, which soars far above the 5 per cent general unemployment at 28.2 per cent.

This is a grave problem. A generational surge of tens of millions of new workers, caused by a population increase, is not expected to subside until 2050. Youth jobs are of critical importance to stability, as the Arab spring aptly showed.
