The increase in Sweden’s defense expenditure will be largely influenced by the country’s strained relationship with Russia, the acquisition of new defense systems and the country’s participation in international peacekeeping missions.
On average, Sweden allocated 1.32% of its GDP for defense expenditure during the review period. However, military expenditure as a percentage of GDP is expected to decrease to an average of 1.1% during the forecast period, as the country’s annual GDP growth rate is larger than the predicted growth rate of the Swedish defense budget.
The defense budget of Sweden is estimated at US$6.46 billion in 2011, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.17% during the forecast period, to reach US$7.2 billion by 2016.
