Channel 4 showed the Liberal Democrat MP Mark Oaten struggling to survive on £35 a week alongside hard-up tenants on the Goresbrook Village estate in Dagenham, East London.
However, it has emerged that Oaten was actually paid £3,720 to take part in the four-part documentary Tower Block Of Commons, and he spent a week living on a tough council estate as part of show.
Oaten was branded a hypocrite after this fact became public.
The Winchester MP said he had declared the payment on the MPs' register of interests. But other MPs involved in the series insisted they had received no money from the programme-makers.
