As they promised during last night's Newsnight debate [2], the London mayoral candidates have just released their tax returns. Based on their own figures, here's how much tax Ken Livingstone [3], Boris Johnson [4] and Brian Paddick [5] paid last year.
Total taxable income- £473,280 (Mayoral salary of £133,117 and £339,625 from freelance work.)
Total tax paid - £213,749
Tax rate - 45.2%
Total taxable income - £94,568 (Employment income of £5,700, dividends of £63,33 and pension of £25,502.)
Total tax paid - £34,661
Tax rate - 36.7%
Total taxable income: £70,329 (Police pension of £63,397 and £13,355 from other earnings.)
Total tax paid - £14,534
Tax rate - 20.7%
