The Olympics ought to be a global celebration, of Herculean achievements and common bonds, its a shame this year has been mired by China's indifference to human rights.

The was nothing extraordinary. It has become mundane.

Yes. Its the ambition of all sports people to represent their country at the Olympics. And, it has opened up China to the world and shown that the Chinese are ordinary people just like us. The Chinese have shown great tolerance of the criticism from the outside world and handled demonstrations.sensitively. These protests against HR should have been suspended during the Games. There is plenty of time to take up the protests after wards. The focus should have been on the Sport and not on politics.

Despite hating both sports and authoritarian regimes, I found myself curiously entranced by the whole affair. Maybe it's because the weather's crap and I'm bored of Big Brother.

They have been organised very well. Perhaps only a totalitarian government could organise them quite so well.

How could one enjoy a tyranny providing bread and circuses to placate the plebs while the economy collapses?

The Butcher's Apron forever on the screen p-ssed me right off. So the final event has to have David Beckham and a London bus as representitives of 'Britishness'.Ugh
They'll always be an England indeed. - Marburg

Results have been excellent and not just for those with medals. Commentary has been patchy but mostly entertaining.
BUT the way the Chinese have tried to manage the games and the way the Russians and others have sought to use the distraction is not so good.

It's always good to see the best sports people in the world compete but I dont think China was yet ready to host them. Environmental pledges couldn't be met, and of course there are still problems with China's treatement of anyone who wishes to voice an opinion that opposes her own. There was a protest zone organized by the government. If you wished to protest, you needed to apply. All the applications to use this space were rejected. There is also a question about the age of one of the Chinese gymnastics team. It would appear that computer experts have analyzed information and found one, to be under age. I don't think that a country with the potential to openly lie like this should host the Olympics, and finally, sports is political. As much as the Olympics organization believe it not to be so, the reality is, people represent flags and countries. At this level of international sport, politics cannot be avoided.

No - Over-paid professional sportsmen/women and too much flag waving - these people represent no-one but themselves. The really depressing part is the British medal winners will all have their snouts firmly in the 2012 London Olympics trough!

How could I fail to enjoy them with China winning more golds than the USA? Looking at Bush was like watching Hitler seeing Jesse Owens win the 100 yards in 1936. Hell, these heathen Chinee haven't yet been converted to Christianity.

They seemed to be more enjoyable at the start when there was a greater focus on the political/ human rights aspects of China's hosting of the event, and when the British successes began rolling in, the media coverage become much less critical

Yes. It was good to see sportspeople performing without being part of the celebrity culture. Such a contrast to our prima donna footballers.

Olympic GAMES they say. Who thought it would be playful? I cannot see any sense in getting to be faster and even faster than any of my opponents. Good to be back to normal.

Yes. I didn't watch on TV, as was disgusted with the Chinese authorities desire to 'clean up' Beijing for appearance's sake. However the performance of oiur athletes has been spectacular, and I hope, an inspiration for more young people to use and develop their natural talents

We willingly ignore human rights abuses by the Chinese Government for the sake of watching a few ponces run and jump around in lycra.
