As many European countries including the UK are seeing there is a resurgence of the political mid-right, but Italy is not returning to fascism. When a people hang their fascist leader in the street and spit on him I do not think they are about to go back to that.

Unfortunately, multi-culturalism doesn't work and Italy is showing that sloppy immigration controls can cause significant unrest amongst the indigeneous population. The excessive numbers of immigrants may suit businesses and the "London chattering classes", who obtain a cheap source of labour , but the effect on the rest of this overcrowded island is too much to put up with. Our democratic system failed to ask us if we wished to experiment with a multi- cultural society, if it had done I'm pretty sure it would have received a resounding "NO".

Italians lacked the commitment the first time round. Why would they bother a second?

Well Dell'Utri and Berlusconi promised to revise history books so that people stopped celebrating the resistance fight as an expression of democracy... And Berlusconi - the incoming PM - did not take part in the 25th April celebrations, that mark the end of the II World war and the defeat of fascism and no newspaper or media channel objected to his absence from the celebrations... He and his mates call the resistance a disgrace (they killed so many fascists in the process of liberating Italy) and our constitution based on the rejection of fascism as 'outdated'.... judge for yourself!

It never stopped! Fascists have always ruled the top echelons of Italian society.

I used to be a Fascist. But then I gave it up. Didn't like the clothes - and the company left something to be desired. Now I'm right behind that nice Cameron fellow.

Although Italy may be drifting further to the right it does not mean they are 'flirting with fascism'. You have only to see the Tories' victory in Crewe & Nantwich here yesterday in order to realise that the whole continent is beginning to experience a shift to the economic right-wing, as ordinary people start to feel some sort of financial squeeze.

Like a lot of european states it's just going through an identity crisis brought about by globalization. I lived in Italy for a few months not long ago and, Tuscany at least, isn't as far right-wing as most of the U.K is.

No, but how can a person wade through all the garbage that is going on in this nation and actually find the nerve to critique another nation. I believe the good old USA must take a good long, hard look and come to grips with their own identity crisis. I deeply love my country but I am having difficulty determining whether we are going right or left at the moment. Sorry if I didn't add any insight to your query. Shirley A. Willford

Antonio Gramsci and his disciples have caused far more damage than the Italian Fascists.

Did they? Did Gramsci and his disciples ally with Hitler? Or were they maybe diehard Stalinists? I think any concise Modern history textbook for beginers would be suitable for you! - Ron

It's too easy to bandy words like "Fascist" around and then make comments about it, having no idea what the term means.

Italians's have an apathy towards poltics that allows people like Berloscone , Andriotti and former Angliei to call the shots. Public apathy is the cancer of liberty and justice. Justice has failed Italians for many years.

The WWII Axis values dominated mainstream politics in Japan for decades, and still does. Italy's election result confirms how easily those values revive, and be accepted.

The world is becoming Fascist again. Thanks to the effort of Israelis who have occupied territories and kill the Palestinian stone thrower with automatic weapons.

Not only the seemingly blind support of Berlusconi but also the election of the ex-Fascist Mayor of Rome show a definite pattern country-wide of right wing views becoming completely acceptable for too many people.
