Chart of the day: Winning the valence war
By Alex Hern Published 12 July 2012
In this week's New Statesman, Peter Kellner explains why Labour must win the "valence" war:
Suppose you feel that strongly about the role of the private sector in the NHS, either for or against. That is a positional view. But suppose you don’t mind that much either way, and all you want is prompt, high-quality care when you need it. In that case, yours is a valence view.
Most politicians, activists and commentators are full of positional views. But millions of swing voters aren’t: they take a valence view of politics. They judge parties and politicians not on their manifestos but on their character. Are they competent? Honest? Strong in a crisis? Likely to keep their promises?
To explore this, YouGov took a series of political controversies and asked people which of four options they favoured – in each case, we offered three positional options (“left”, “right”, status quo) and one valence option.

Really? Has anybody ever told you that the way to find out if a position/view has meaning is to reverse it and find out if that is still an arguable position. Take your 'valence' view on redistribution. Who argues that welfare benefits should be distributed unfairly or not sensibly? Empty motherhood and apple pie sentiments like these valence views are an abdication of the responsibility to come up with actual policies.
Instead of thinking if a view is 'left' or 'right' wing, which I agree is a pretty meaningless distinction, perhaps our time and energy would be better spent producing workable, sustainable ideas and presenting these to the public. Then people can decide if they are sensible or not.
I completelly disagree, Chris.
I want motherhood AND apple pie. If i'm actually forced to make some hard choices, then i'll either just have to vote Green, or become an opinion pollster.
I'm slightly disappointed that the "quickly invent a time machine and go back and sort it all out" option wasn't offered more frequently.
