The Returning Officer: Abingdon I

Returning Officer

By Stephen Brasher

In 1921, an anonymous donor paid to have a catalogue of Allied war poetry made for Birmingham public libraries. It was dedicated to Private William John Billington of the London Regiment, who had been killed in Palestine in March 1918. One of the volumes listed was D F (Daniel Fernley) Brundrit’s Gleanings, published in 1919.

In 1924, Brundrit stood as the Labour candidate for Abingdon, finishing third. He is listed as having commanded a tank called Cynic in 1917, being taken prisoner in November that year. In 1934, he published Is the Resurrection True? – which the Tablet said could “hardly be considered a serious contribution to the subject”.
