"The third life"

And our created being is suspended in the eternal being, and, with respect to its essential being, it is one with it, with respect to its being.

John of Ruysbroeck

If I've come to the just desserts
of saved-for-later,
it's not before time.
I'd always planned
to set this skin aside
and take that faint
desire path through the fields
to someone else's dusk, the scant
and powder of it, birds
I'd never heard
till now, their songs
like blessings in a reverie of husk
and pollen: common
blessings, like the west wind,
or the stars.
