New lessons in employer engagement
Adults easily forget how tough classrooms can be. The other children often bully the weakest, or the one most different. Teachers may demand results, or make it clear that they don’t expect any. Parents can make it worse no matter what they do – by getting too involved, for instance, or by not caring at all. Peer groups have expectations and make judgements.
Humiliation is only as far away as a slip of the tongue. Those grown ups who have benefited from a “good education” may not even realise how bad a bad school can be. Fully a fifth of students can hardly wait for the last day of school in the June after they turn 16. For them, school seems to offer so little that it might as well be prison, a place they’re forced to go each day where they will be bored out of their heads.
