New Statesman editorial work experience
At the New Statesman we’ve thought hard about how best to target our work experience scheme at those who need it most. As a result, we will be working actively with selected charities to offer work experience to students from low-income families, while scaling back our general work experience placements.
We will no longer be offering placements throughout the year, but instead you can apply for a two-week placement during the Easter or summer holidays. The placements will be a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in current affairs, critical writing and magazine journalism more generally.
Each placement will normally last for two weeks, during which time you will gain experience working on both our print edition and ever-growing website. While regular office tasks and featured blogs will be assigned to you, this opportunity will best suit someone who is self-motivated, open-minded, polite and brimming with story ideas across a range of topics.
We will run four two-week placements during March and April (Easter) and eight placements during July and August (summer). The deadline to apply for Easter placements is 20 December. The deadline for summer placements is 31 March. Expect to hear back within two weeks of the deadline about whether your application has been successful.
How to apply
Please send a CV and covering letter to firstname.lastname@example.org This should include a small (250-400 word) critique of the magazine’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as a paragraph detailing what you’d like to achieve during your time with us. You should include the following information in the email subject line:
Work experience application – Your Name – Easter/summer
Please note that we receive a great deal of correspondence on the subject of work placements. We are extremely keen to share our experience and meet the next generation of journalists and editors. Be careful to follow the above instructions carefully, as we are unlikely to respond otherwise.
