Art Editor

The New Statesman, Britain’s leading weekly political and cultural news magazine, has created the new position of art editor. The successful candidate will be technically adept and will have the flair needed to produce brilliantly designed magazine pages and covers, as well as be able to help develop our web strategy. You will need to be ideas-driven, energetic and have a proven ability in design and art direction in a modern media setting – ideally in newspapers or magazines. This is a great opportunity for an ambitious designer eager to make a name in a competitive and fast-paced news environment.

Picture Editor

The New Statesman is looking for a part-time picture editor to support its award-winning design team. The successful candidate will have a brilliant eye for a dynamic image and a great contacts book, and be able to work quickly and effectively under pressure. He or she will be working for both the magazine and our web operation.

Sub-editor

The New Statesman is looking for a fast and accurate sub-editor to work on its busy sub-editing desk. The successful candidate will be working on a wide range of editorial copy – from interviews to features and news stories – and he or she will have the skills needed to ensure that, whether published online or in print, all of the New Statesman’s copy is published to the highest possible editorial standards. The successful candidate will be able to deliver fantastic headlines, demonstrate fastidious sub-editing skills and maintain composure no matter how close the deadline.

New Statesman Projects Intern

The New Statesman Brand and Project Department is looking for an intern to help plan and professionally execute a range of events, including roundtable debates, conferences and symposiums across a wide spectrum of current affairs issues.

A strong element of the position will be to support the team with the organisation and running of 34 fringe events at the Liberal Democrat, Labour and Conservative party conferences in late September and early October. The successful candidate will also support our promotional and branding initiatives.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student who will be commencing the third year of their degree in the autumn. We are looking for someone with a demonstrated interest in current affairs who also has some experience in running events.

The position will be for 2 to 3 days a week. We require availability from June 15th until October 9th. The position is unpaid however travel expenses from zones 1-3 will be covered. Deadline for applications is Friday 5 June.

Editorial Internship

The New Statesman editorial internship is a great opportunity to experience first-hand the running of a weekly magazine and to work with a busy editorial team. Interns will be expected to carry out research for the editorial team and to help out with day to day office duties and administrative tasks. They will also be welcome to pitch articles which, if accepted, will be published in the magazine or on the website, and to contribute ideas and thoughts about the magazine in editorial meetings.

Applicants must:

  • be educated to degree level
  • have a strong interest in politics and current affairs
  • be self-motivated, efficient, well organised and reliable.

Information:

  • A standard placement lasts two months. Working hours are 10am - 6pm with early starts and late finishes on press days.
  • All interns are based in our offices in Farringdon.
  • Placements are unpaid; however interns will be paid our standard rates for any articles published and we do cover travel costs (within London zones 1-3)
  • We have more applicants than places; candidates are selected on merit.

Arts and Books Internship

The arts and books internship offers an excellent opportunity to be fully involved in the day-to-day running of a busy arts desk. Working with a small team of editors, interns will be expected to research arts events, contribute ideas for future pages, carry out basic editing and assist with general administrative tasks. They will also have the chance to pitch and write up book reviews and arts pieces.

  • Applicants must be educated to degree level, have a thorough knowledge of literature and contemporary arts and a keen interest in arts journalism.
  • The internship lasts for one month and is based in our offices in Farringdon. Hours are 10am-6pm, Mon-Fri and the position is unpaid, although travel expenses can be reimbursed.
