Backing the builders

With millions of people on social housing waiting lists, thousands more in temporary accommodation and hundreds of rural villages where the local people can no longer afford to buy a house, it is crystal clear that this country needs to build more homes.

But statistics show that in the last several years, fewer homes have been built than at any point since 1924. Not only is this damaging for the construction in­dustry and the economy, but it also has the potential to make home ownership a possibility only for the privileged few, causing social tension.

The government is backing the builders – financially helping councils that build new homes and making it easier for local people to build the homes they want. It is now time for councils to step up and drive forward housebuilding in their areas. Where they don’t, it is up to every one of us to hold them account.
