Biotech Britain: Realising the impossible
Biotechnology is the use of biological systems and living organisms, or their derivatives, to make or modify products or processes. While its use is commonly understood to refer to genetic engineering, the use of biotechnology currently has four main fields of application: medicine and healthcare, agriculture and food production, industrial (for example, enzymes as catalysts) and the environment.
New lessons in employer engagement
Adults easily forget how tough classrooms can be. The other children often bully the weakest, or the one most different. Teachers may demand results, or make it clear that they don’t expect any. Parents can make it worse no matter what they do – by getting too involved, for instance, or by not caring at all. Peer groups have expectations and make judgements.
Media: The multi-platform age
"This industry is about the very fabric of our democracy - how we talk to ourselves and how we talk to the world." The words of Tom McNally, leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, in the NS roundtable discussion, accurately convey the importance of our constantly evolving broadcasting media. One might question the appropriateness of that word, “our”: obviously, much media today can hardly be said to belong to one country or another. Cyberspace is an international zone, representing either a liberation of communication or a dangerously underpoliced world, according to taste.
