Books of the year 2010 | Amanda Foreman

D-Day by Antony Beevor

My books of the year are Antony Beevor's D-Day; Andrew Graham-Dixon's Caravaggio; and Antonia Fraser's Must You Go. Beevor's D-Day stands out among books on the subject because of the vivid and visceral way he combines the experiences of High Command with that of ordinary soldiers. Dixon's Caravaggio is and will remain the last word on the much-misunderstood artist; and Fraser's Must you Go gives a moving testimonial of the thirty-year love affair between the playwright and the historian.
