Books of the year 2010 | Andrew Hussey
The book I enjoyed most this year was Romain Gary: A Tall Story by David Bellos (Harvill Secker). This is the biography of a mysterious and compelling figure, who wrote in French and English (which he did not learn until he was thirty and which was his sixth language). Gary was more than just a writer - avaitor, diplomat, film director and hoaxer: he the only man to have won the Prix Goncourt twice, once under his own name and under a pseudonomyn. This is a lovely, sinous book - it helps that Bellos is that rare thing a fine acadmeic who can also spare and elegant prose.
