Life's new basics

Peter Wilby (31 July) castigates my eulogy of air-conditioning on environmental grounds. "Get the Greens hot under the collar . . . What fun!" he wrote. Well, if the global warmers are right, this luxury will fast become a necessity. Three years ago rather a lot of elderly French people died in their (unairconditioned) flats as temperatures rose into the forties.
