Letters - A middling mystery

I am rereading A Compass Error, written by Sybille Bedford in 1968. Near the beginning of the novel, the protagonist is reading the New Statesman (for which she wants to write!) and refers to reading "y.y's middle". Can anyone throw light on this reference?
