Letters - Home and away

I want to thank you for last week's issue. I left America for Britain five years ago and now I am a British citizen. Being an American in such times has challenged all I believe about democracy, freedom and the responsibility of the rich to care for the poor. If the US embassy asks where my loyalty lies, I would say that it lies in the place where I am allowed to watch Jeremy Paxman ask difficult questions, where I am allowed to protest against causes in which I don't believe, and where the state will care for me if I am ill.
