Darcus Howe (13 October) has it wrong. Cheltenham was not, as he claims, "the safest of Tory seats" in 1992. It was vulnerable to a swing of just 4 per cent. The Lib Dems duly achieved a larger swing than that - as, indeed, they did in Bath, North Devon and North Cornwall.
