Letter of the week

So Charlie Whelan (4 February) thinks there was no "secret meeting" to form a cross-party republican group. Wrong, Charlie, there was, on 23 January in the Attlee Room of the House of Lords, hosted by Lord (Jack) Dormand. It was a buffet supper, attended by a number of Labour and Liberal MPs. Roy Hattersley was expected, but sent his apologies. A good time was had by all. I should know: I was there and, as Republic's treasurer, expect to be billed shortly. It was held in secret to stop the whips arm-twisting the usual suspects into not attending.
