Debating point

I expected more from the New Statesman's Scottish Parliament commemorative issue than Tom Brown's article ("A load of numpties and sweetie-wives", 5 July).

Brown sees fit to repeat Duncan Hamilton MSP's assertion that my speech in the allowances debate was "pathetic". A pity, then, that he did not see fit to check with either Hamilton or myself. Had he done so he would have discovered that Hamilton had apologised for his remarks.

If Brown had taken the trouble to read the debate he might have noticed that even the SNP business manager, Mike Russell, felt compelled to compliment my speech.
