The finalists
Bolton and Bury Treasures and Trust
The New Opportunities Fund (NOF) Digitisation Project will provide a unique model for the creation of innovative on-line learning resources for the potential benefit of every citizen in the UK. The programme brings together a wide range of partnerships representing the community and voluntary sectors, local authorities, libraries and archives, museums, further and higher education, and the private sector. The projects, which are designed to support lifelong learning under one of three broad themes; cultural enrichment, citizenship, and re-skilling, will transfer text, drawings, photos, maps, film and sound recordings into easily accessible electronic format. Interactive and interpretative material will enhance and support source items. The adoption of rigorous technical standards will help to ensure the accessibility and sustainability of the materials for future use. Bolton Museum, Art Gallery and Aquarium (BMAG), Bolton Archives and Local Studies Unit (BALSU) and Bury Art Gallery and Museum (BAG) have collections of unique artefacts and specimens which they hold in trust for the people of Bolton and Bury, for the nation and for those abroad. Bolton and Bury Treasures in Trust will develop an entertaining and informative web based resource that will enhance access to thousands of items from the collections of the partner institutions, many never previously displayed to the public. Virtual visitors will be able to explore the wonders of Ancient Egypt, exotic and rare plant specimens too delicate to be on display and discover the world famous paintings of Thomas Moran, and the internationally important artefacts of the Industrial Revolution.
