The finalists
Martlesham Community Portal
I hope self-nomination is in good taste! The project nominated has been started to unite the local villages into an on-line community. It complements individual web developments & projects and is intended to work along-side other more traditional media such as parish magazines & the local pub! This project has been designed from the outset to be inter-active, and to allow the community residents to contribute & participate. Already we have members of the community who are moving into areas of IT and web-publishing which they will not have done by themselves, thereby expan=ding their own horizons & contributing directly to the community in which they live. Finally, this project has been built using open-source software, which itself has been developed by a global community of volunteers. It is therefore very approriate that it is being used to benefit a local community, but that experiences learnt from the development are shared globally. Malcolm Bell
