The finalists
Hampton Online
This was one of the first community websites, it started back in 1997. It now has a huge and loyal following and has become a significant force in the borough it serves. It has changed the way the local community and local authority interface to the benefit of all. There are two special election features on the website which have given a new meaning to the concept of e-democracy. The "May Poll" which covered the Local Elections in detail - there was almost double the predicted turnout. And the Online Hustings which covered the parliamentary election. The Ward pages list every council ward and have contact details for every councillor and the community police officers. I feel I know my councillors and MP and they are readily accessible to me now. It is a major contribution to local democracy in my view, as a humble everyday user, and it is about time somebody blew a few trumpets for it. Chris Hodges
