New Media Awards 2009

About New Media Awards

The New Statesman New Media Awards have been highlighting the positive impact of new media technology on public life for 11 years.

When digital technologies intersect with civic life, they can impact a small community or an entire nation. In 1998, New Statesman held the inaugural New Media Awards, with the aim of promoting creative and innovative use of new technology.

The New Media Awards are now in their eleventh year. Rapid technical advances have highlighted the importance of effective delivery and user-centric solutions. It also means that these technologies are increasingly more accessible and user friendly. New media solutions are available to those with limited finances and support. The new categories aim to encourage the smaller projects that impact on our lives alongside the larger, national projects that also have improved society.

Categories

The awards aim to recognise those that realise the potential of new media technology and have the commitment and stamina to effectively execute their ideas. The award categories, which vary from year to year, suitably reflect this goal.

The award categories are:

  • Digital Democracy
  • Access, Inform, Educate
  • Digital Inclusion
  • Campaign for Change
  • Annual New Media Award for Achievement

A description of each of the categories, including how they relate to last year’s categories can be found here.

Nominations close on 30th October.

Judging

The judges will be looking for evidence of creative implementation of technology; a willingness to exploit the potential of new media; and an effort in making content as widely accessible as possible. The intention is to focus on those who have achieved something of benefit to others, whether in their community or in wider society.

Awards

The awards will be presented at an exclusive - invitation only - event in central London in Novemeber 2009 (tbc).
