New Media Awards 2008

Dad Info

Nominated in Inform and educate category.

Dad Info is the first universally available information service for dads in the world.

The service consists of:

- www.dad.info - a brand new website for dads with information on pregnancy, birth, babies, kids, parenting issues and separation/divorce, all from a dad’s perspective.

- The “Dad Card”; a credit card sized info card, distributed FREE to the maternity services of the UK for midwives to hand out to the half a million expectant dads they meet each year – directing them to the site.

- Free emails based on their baby’s due date take new dads through the essentials of new fatherhood. Comments and live chats on the site form the basis of this new online community.

  • Dad Info should win the award for it’s vision and ambition to bring information to every new dad in the UK so they can do the best for their partners and kids.

Fathers have a huge impact on the health and wellbeing of mothers and children, whether they’re involved or not – society ignores the impact that dads at its peril.

While the UK government has spent millions of pounds on information services for parents (£32M this year!), most of it is aimed at mothers and isn’t relevant to men. While new mums emerge from ante-natal clinic laden with leaflets and books, there still hasn't been a universally available national information service for new fathers until Dad Info – a private initiative – came along this year.

As well as a website packed with loads of fantastic unique content, the service offers a free email course for new dads written by Dr Mark Hamilton from Radio 1. Users register their baby's due date and emails are sent out automatically, with relevant content for each month of the pregnancy and beyond.

But that's not the whole story. There have been other attempts to create info sites for dads, but the problem has always been reaching dads offline at the point when they really need and want information - during the pregnancy.

Midwives meet more dads than any other professional in the UK, but they're overstretched and have no money to invest in fathers - but they want something to give to dads. We’ve solved the problem for them.

We’ve created the “Dad Card’ – a credit card sized info card, directing new dads to the website. They are distributed free to maternity units in the UK, for midwives to hand out to the half a million new dads a year who turn up at their services. We’ve also created a slightly different card for public services working with families to hand out to dads with young kids.

Dad Info has created the first universal information service for dads in the world. For that alone, it deserves public recognition.

  • Finally, a really good website that sees babies and kids from the fathers perspective. Parenting info services always go on about "how to get back to work?" - this website asks the opposite question "how to get out of work>".
