Submitted by Simon Cleaver, 27 March 2007

    17 May 2007

1 comment from readers

  • Sorry, but the design is really bland it has all the same sorts of features that the other deputy leadership websites have.

I'd be shocked if the Benn site won.

    26 March 2007

Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson is a prominent politician and journalist.

1 nomination from readers

  • Boris-Johnson.com has been a breakthough in political blogging, with witty commentary and an enormous community surrounding it. The new forum has this year enhanced the site and led to lively debate. It is a great resource for politically-minded individuals to discuss the events of the day.

Nominated by Simon, 05 April 2007

4 comments from readers

  • I agree completely. It is one of the best political blogs there is. It is greatly enhanced by the quality of moderation - swift, reliable and fair. Unfortunately not all blogs, such as Peter Hitchens', can say the same. Boris Johnson obviously attracts the best people.

Submitted by Philipa, 14 May 2007

  • Boris Johnson's weblog is witty, informative, extremely well moderated and has an astonishingly loyal community! The recent addition of the forum has only enhanced the quality of discussion on the site, and it's an essential part of the political blogosphere.

Submitted by Simon, 14 May 2007

  • Unlike the 'big' commentisfree and haveyoursay blogs, Boris trusts people and allows comments to be posted instantly. This makes for a better, more interactive discussion among contributors. Discourse remains firmly within the boundries of good taste, whilst wide ranging opinions are voiced.

Submitted by StevenL, 14 May 2007

  • The Forum is amazing and ever-evolving: the blogosphere at its best

    25 May 2007

Cllr Andrew Burns

Local elected Labour councillor. Was former cabinet member in City of Edinburgh Council until last election. Looks like Mr. Burns in the Simpsons.

1 nomination from readers

  • He seems to be one of the few councillors (indeed any politican no matter what level) who have embraced blogging, podcasting and videocasting and doesn't just keep it to politics. He really "gets it" which is unusual for a councillor/politician (in my opinion). As an Edinburgh politician hater, it is quite strange for me to making this nomination.

Nominated by John Wallace, 23 May 2007

8 comments from readers

  • I agree with the above. Good blog.

Submitted by Mike, 23 May 2007

  • The blog is not bad at all. Don't know if it is the best though.

Submitted by David Wilson, 24 May 2007

  • I live in Edinburgh; and Andrew Burns is one of those rare politicians who - even when you totally disagree with his policy stance - it\'s hard not to respect his passion and commitment. I think that comes across very strongly in his excellent blog, which is rare in that it encompasses both politics and the personal. Also, it\'s quite often very funny!

Submitted by Jenny Wales, 24 May 2007

  • Very good, local blog ... it is one of the best Cllr. blogs I've come across. No constituent of Andrew Burns' could complain that they don't know what he's up to, or what he thinks about local issues.

Submitted by Peter Barker, 25 May 2007

  • My husband asked me to look at this blog and rate it to make sure he wasn't going mad.

It is a good local blog. Not full of political dogma which is unusual for a politician's blog in my experience. Obviously been well thought out and obviously shows the man rather than only the politician.

I also had a look as some of the other blogs in this category and would assume that Mr. Burns' blog is in with a chance.

Submitted by Laurie Wallace, 25 May 2007

  • Followed a link from Edinburgh Sucks Not a bad blog at all. Don't agree with his politics but a worthwhile read now and again I would think.

Submitted by William McAndrew, 26 May 2007

  • Who'd have thunk it! Andrew Burns gets blogging and makes such a good job of it.

    Wonders will never cease

Submitted by James Taylor, 28 May 2007

  • A thoroughly entertaining read.

Submitted by Alan Roden., 30 May 2007

Cllr Anthony Mckeown

Anthony Mckeown is Labour councillor for the Gamesley Ward on High Peak Borough Council.

1 nomination from readers

  • This is an interesting blog, which covers mainly local issues, along with a mixture of both local and national politics and non political stuff such as film reviews.

The blog is backed up by a traditional website : www.anthonymckeown.info and in addition to the web presence, the blog has also appeared by way of a weekly column / summary in the Glossop Advertiser newspaper.

The blog also includes additional bits such as a last fm widget, a chat tool and flickr album details.

Nominated by Ted Smith, 31 May 2007

David Cameron MP

David's site is a fairly standard MP website with a few extra bits. What makes it stand out however, is Web Cameron (http://www.webcameron.org.uk/), his innovative video diaries.

All of his reports are available to download on the site.

David Lammy MP

David Lammy is a Labour MP for Tottenham and Culture Minister in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

3 nominations from readers

  • Lammy uses the web to maximize his publicity. Using podcasts, webcasts and photos, Lammy tries to keep in touch with voters and tell them what he's been up to. He also has an online newsletter and archived speeches, papers and articles and many links to causes he is passionate about.

    26 March 2007

  • David Lammy's site is very thorough, and you can always see what he's been doing in Tottenham and all over the country. I think it's excellent that he dedicated a page to this year's transatlantic slave trade abolition bicentenary too, because it gives many links to other sites where you can inform yourself about the history and events for this year. It's so important. Well done.

Nominated by FB, 12 April 2007

  • His website is very informative, interactive and easy to navigate. It provides a great insight into the work of a politician!

Nominated by Nora Mulready, 22 April 2007

4 comments from readers

  • Excellent website giving constituents up to date information. Innovative uses of podcasts and video messages as well as back copies of speeches are also useful

Submitted by AK, 10 April 2007

  • This website is fantastic. It provides up to date information for constituents and for anyone interested in David Lammy on a local and national level. It is easy to navigate and provides great resources, links and information. The podcasts and video messages challenge other MP's to get up to date and demonstrate they too can interact.

Submitted by LC, 12 April 2007

  • Lammy has raised the bar for other MPs to follow. Lammy has a national and international following and his site enables intersted parties to keep up to date with his musings. Many MPs are still living in the stone age and do not yet even provide e-mail details let alone an interactive website service.

Submitted by ABH, 12 April 2007

  • And it seems that Lammy adds his own comments as well

Submitted by Myke Wylson, 28 May 2007

    26 March 2007

Ed Miliband MP

This is my MP\'s website, i think it must rate as one of the best. The voting bit is by far the most superior.

    29 May 2007

Gerry Sutcliffe MP

Gerry Sutcliffe is the Labour MP for Bradford South Constituency.

5 nominations from readers

  • I have been a visitor to this website for quite some time. I am a local business owner and find this website very helpful to find out local news and business events with email newsletters, videos, podcasts and also enjoyable sections of the website in cluding local photographers photographs (including one of mine!) and activities of the local community and school projects.

Nominated by Nat Lockwood, 30 May 2007

  • This website provides a huge range of very valuable information. I have used it personally to find out more about Gerry's work as a Labour MP and professionally in order to find out more about his Ministerial role and responsibilities in the Home Office.

Having worked for an MP, I recognise why this is such a valuable resource- particularly in the information it provides for constituents. Advice is accessible and the website offers an online surgery.

The site is interactive- for example, photos can be added, which makes it more of a community resource.

Nominated by James Allen, 30 May 2007

  • I’ve visited a lot of MP’s websites, and Gerry’s is really in a different league.

Gerry has really used the potential of the internet to communicate well with his constituents – with a BSL video, ‘Online Surgery’ internet telephony service, and regular column and podcast. The website provides a wealth of useful information, but it’s also easy to find what you want. The guidance offered in the Advice Index is invaluable, acting as an instant casework service for people - some of whom may not be comfortable with contacting a member of parliament for help in the traditional ways. The Bradford South section lets people easily tap into Gerry’s knowledge of their neighbourhood. The whole website reflects Gerry’s passion for his constituency and constituents – inviting them to contribute to their MP’s website through the have your say section, community gallery, and YouTube video page.

The site also features an RSS feed and e-newsletter to keep users up-to-date with developments. The best website from an MP that I’ve seen.

Nominated by andrew thornton, 30 May 2007

  • Gerry Sutcliffe has certainly raised the stakes in making himself more accessible through this modern, clear and innovative website. I would be very surprised if any other MP's website was as good as this. Accessibilty is the key to this website's success. Key features include:

*A clear advice index for a wide spectrum of issues

*A BSL video and opportunity to upload videos to Gerry's U-tube page as well as podcasts to hear Gerry's views on certain issues

*The opportunity to organise an online surgery with Gerry

*A section where you can upload photos of events and things happening in the community

*You can also subscribe to e-news features to be kept ud do date of things happening in the area

*A 'have your say' section where you can comment on topical issues

I fully support Gerry's nomination for his new, revamped and exciting website which means he his more accesible than your average politician!

Nominated by Richard Dunbar, 30 May 2007

  • Gerry has translated his information into British Sign Language in order that our own deaf community can feel included in politics and influence decisions that are relevant to them.

Nominated by Debbie Williams, 31 May 2007

  • Yes I've got a photo in too!!!!

I think it is a well designed site that is clear and informative. I like that it has an interactive element - and such excellent photographs!LOL

It also seems to be kept well up to date which is something other similar sites often fall down on.

Submitted by Mike Kilyon, 30 May 2007

  • Just a quick comment to thank all of you for your nominations. It's great that you liked the website enough to nominate it.

I wanted to create a constituency website that everyone could enjoy using with ease, be a part of, and ultimately be proud of too. Lots of people have worked hard on it, and I'm sure they'll appreciate the recognition. Hopefully the judges will award us the big cherry to go on the icing on the cake!

    Thanks again.

2 nominations from readers

  • Leighton Andrews has a strong background in using new technology and the internet as a campaign tool.

Leighton has embraced new technology more than any Labour politician; including his blog, podcasts and an online discussion forum for local constituents.

A few months ago Leighton Andrews launched Rhondda.TV – an online, community television station. This ground-breaking project was the culmination of months of work. The service features video clips about the Rhondda, with four channels - News, Community, History and a Welsh Language channel.

Leighton also involves community organisations and civic groups, by supplying them with the means to publish their own film online.

The project was commended by The Guardian: "[Leighton Andrews] should be congratulated for pioneering the latest technology to find new ways of communicating with voters" and BBC Wales presented Leighton with the Political Communicator of the Year award for his efforts.

They way people are using the Internet is changing; as more people get broadband they get more accustomed to new online services that would not have been possible a few years ago.

Paul Flynn

A shrewd, witty, well-informed, Welsh pixie of an MP who has worked diligently to help his constituents with compassion and concern, and striven to stamp out abuse of the little by the large with his terrier like campaigning. Whilst an undying Newport Nationalist Paul has never ceased trying to protect all from the corporate lobbying of pharmas and certain financial services companies, the foolishness of ill-informed legislation wreaking havoc with peoples lives, and the short sighted and damaging decisions made by any political party. Despite the seriousness of his politics he has always maintained his customary humour and rough charm.

2 nominations from readers

  • I really like his ways of getting information across, his website is

    25 May 2007

  • Paul, quite literally, wrote the book on how to be a great MP. His Backbencher Ten Commandments set the standard high and he has consistently striven to ensure that he does not disappoint his constituents or himself. As “classic” Labour he has remained as steadfast a supporter of the Labour Party as he is an opponent of nuclear power, Trident, and overpriced, overhyped, and over here pharmaceuticals. A Newport Nationalist and proud Welshman he always has always served his constituents, the weak and the neglected with vigour .

Despite his majority he continues to maintain a very close relationship with his constituents, and even after 20 years, is still very happy answering the phone to constituents and spends considerable time dealing with their concerns. He has embraced technology and new media to assist in his constituency work. After a recent redesign of the website Paul has created a scintillating synthesis of the best of the old website, and new exciting material. Whilst many MPs are blogging this site provides irreverent humour and is not afraid to tackle thorny issues – it is dedicated to “Fight Truth Decay”. In a short time he has attracted a core of dedicated followers which provides lively coment. However in his superhuman efforts to reach his constituents he also compiles a weekly e-newsletter to which anyone can subscribe. Newport TV provides a wealth of short videos providing images with a punch and will shortly be followed by Radio MP. With an eye catching, but easy on the eye, design the site is easy to use and navigate. The new search engine means that there is no information overload. In short, this excellent website perfectly matches the idiosyncratic, endlessly fun, and seriously campaigning MP.

Paul Flynn’s website gives readers the truth, the whole truth, wrapped in wicked humour.

Nominated by Fern Coster, 29 May 2007

A news ticker of Hain's activities, or those relating to him, runs across the top of the page and button-shaped graphics help users navigate thoughout the site.

    26 March 2007

Philip Davies MP

This website is easily accessible and allows for and encourages feedback from constituents. It provides all information regarding his diaries, surgeries and press info, in addition to the all of his activities in the House of Commons; all in all an excellent site.
Philip Davies is a conservative MP representing the Shipley Constituency.

2 nominations from readers

  • Philip Davies\' website provides a calendar on the homepage with the dates of all the events he plans to attend, as well as the times. There is also an easily-accessed list of the committiees he sits upon and links to articles on his latest appearances and speeches. If someone has attended an event with Davies, they can send in photos to possibly be included in the photo gallery. Feedback is also encouraged and people\'s responses to Davies\' actions are published on the website.

    26 March 2007

  • Most MPs do not update their sites and provide very little information. It is clear from his site that he is an active MP looking out for the interests of his consituents. This is a valued trait in an elected Member and one that is often not seen.

Mr Davies should win this award because it is evident through his website, which has all of his newsletters, photos and diary, in addition to press, an education section for schools, he is in touch with his constituents and the community.

  • Although his website is general, without many options for reader engagement, it gets to the point and is well-designed. There is important news about what Goodwill has been doing, as well as photo albums and the option to create an online account to login to the site.
