Each locally-run site is truly unique and reflects the needs and wishes of its own area – with the motto “by the community for the community”. The sites frequently take on campaigns that unite the community they serve. As leaders in encouraging local and democratic participation they sought to plug the information gap at the 2007 elections by providing full information on all candidates. People these days turn to the web for product comparison when seeking information before a major purchase, so why shouldn’t they choose their councillors in the same way?

Access Space

Access Space is the UK’s first free media lab: an open-access learning community where participants learn, create and communicate online. Participation empowers individuals and develops skills, community, creativity and resourcefulness. Access Space focuses on creative engagement, encouraging participants to move from being e-consumers to becoming digital producers.

Access Space is open for walk-in participation 5 days per week, and also runs programmes of workshops, skill-sharing activities and inspirational exhibitions and digital arts events.

Our model challenges the conventional focus on capital spend on ICT hardware and software, and suggests that participants can be mobilised to create an effective learning resource.

We do everything from viral YouTube videos to hand-delivering petitions to ministers, and coming up with a plan to save Iraq. We aired a climate change TV ad on three continents, put billboards for peace in Jerusalem, and helped topple Paul Wolfowitz from the World Bank.

The SMOKEFREE campaign website aims to reduce the UK’s 26% smoking population by 5% over 5 years. Specifically targeting 22-45 year old smokers, it highlights the controlling nature of smoking, and supports nationwide TV and outdoor advertisements.

It aims to change public perception of smoking whilst trying not to completely alienate smokers and above support those kicking the habit. It also targets other tobacco stakeholders including health professionals, local Stop Smoking Services, Primary Care Trusts, and Strategic Health Authorities.

The striking new media campaign, launched by the Department of Health, generates a user experience that educates and promotes the benefits of going smokefree.

Directgov is the government’s flagship digital service, and is the principal online destination for citizens to interact with Government electronically. It provides integrated and relevant customer focused services through multiple channels - the web, digital TV and, most recently, mobile.

By breaking down the artificial barriers created by the structures of government, Directgov offers its customers a way of accessing government on their terms, either directly by specific topic, like ‘Money, tax and benefits’ or ‘Motoring’, or through sections tailored for specific groups, such as ‘Young people’. The Disability Rights Commission (DRC) is an independent body established by an Act of Parliament to stop discrimination and promote equality of opportunity for disabled people. They offer a helpline service to give advice and information on the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

The Helpline is contactable via telephone, text phone, post and email. The service has been very successful and received over half a million enquiries in the first 5 years. The primary objective was to offer a service to those who have difficulty using the telephone such as deaf people, people with speech impediments and people who cannot use their voice.

Downing Street has launched a dedicated channel on YouTube. The launch sees Tony Blair become the first world leader with his own channel on the popular video-sharing site.
