last.fm
last.fm is a platform for social music. It'll keep track of everything you listen to on your computer and iPod (apart from the rubbish tracks which you skip after five seconds, *obviously*), and then process that data through its website. From that starting point, it allows you to track your listening over time, find recommendations for other bands or artists you'll like (based on what you listen to), and find people on the system with listening tastes similar to yours. Like any good social software, it also lets you keep a contacts list, and keep an eye on what all your friends are listening to. Not only that, but it even has a radio player, so you can listen online to radio station - but the twist is that every track is selected to match your taste. And if you click the "love it" or "skip it" buttons in the player, it'll note that as part of your overall listening profile. And that's before you consider the impressive API that'll let you repurpose your listening data on your own blog, or in your own applications. It's an impressive product, make no mistake - and it's also a very beautiful one, following its redesign this year. And, unlike the rest of the so-called "web 2.0" revolution... it's based right here in the UK. Innovative? Not half!
