Since September, we have been running an after school media club which has responsibility for updating the school web page. Since January, The Media Club is also responsible for LEV-TV, a daily web based announcement programme that is broadcast internally.
Since the website has gone ‘live’, the children have developed some very sophisticated skills. In ICT, they are now able to design attractive web pages, considering how best to communicate information. They also are able to upload their pages without any support from the teachers. In particular, they are using and extending skills that have been taught in school. For example, a year six child has created a favourites list solely for the use in finding information to include in his ‘lifestyle’ page.
More importantly, the children have developed life long ‘communication skills’ such as learning to work as part of a team, considering other people’s point of view, knowing how information is best presented and listening and speaking skills.
We are now looking to develop the project further, so we can make better links with our link schools in USA (Maryland), El Salvador and schools in Essex and Bromley. Encouraging the children to be successful ‘global’ citizens.
The school web site and LEV-TV is owned by the children. They are very proud of their work. Neil Woollcott
