About the awards

In 1998, New Statesman dedicated the first New Media Awards to promote projects that embraced new technology, fresh thinking and creative management. Much has happened since then and we no longer look at new media as just being "the web".

To encompass those changes this year's New Media Awards are examining just how new technology has made, and is making, a difference specifically to public life.

In particular the judges will be looking for evidence of delivery of benefits, innovation and efficiency. We intend to focus on the leaders and award those that have really achieved something good for society both at school and at home as well as within the body politic: government, local authorities, health, education, social services, and the civil service.

Rapid technical advances in recent years have highlighted the significance of effective delivery and user-centric solutions. The awards aim to reward those that recognise the potential of new media technology and also have the commitment and drive to bring about their goals and the stamina to see a good idea deliver real benefits for its target community. It is for that reason that we have chosen the following categories:

Best school internet project
Best e-government project
Safety on the net
On the move
Contribution to civic society

This competition is open to any organisation or individual whose efforts to use interactive new media enables and enhances UK civic society. You can send nominations using our online nomination form

Judging
Our panel of judges will review all valid nominations and assess each based on its merits. The panel leader will help the judges to set fair and consistent criteria.

Evaluation
The judges will consider each nomination in the context of the category chosen. However, if appropriate, the judges may decide to put a nomination forward in another category. The judges' decisions are final.

Awards
We will inform the winners and runners up by the end of June 2003 and the awards will be presented at a special party in central London in July 2003.
